Frank McCarthy found inspiration in the childhood classics that he read, and the illustrators who brought the stories to life. He was formally trained at the Art Students League and the Pratt Institute.
McCarthy worked for many years as a commercial illustrator in the New York city area. With a great reputation, McCarthy still longed for more artistic freedom and moved to Arizona in 1974 where he was free to pursue the history of the American West.
